MIND MATTERS
DEPRESSION: THE LATENT EFECT OF CORONA
The corona Virus has been the reason and cause for many problems in the year 2020. One of the important problems is Depression. Due to the pandemic people are not able to do their daily jobs and are forced to stay at home doing nothing to reduce the spread of the virus. Lack of money, fear of death, isolation in case they test positive for COVID, not being able to meet their family, not able to socialize, death of any relative or friend due to COVID, are the reasons of depression.
It is said that ‘Empty Mind is the Workshop Of Devil’ , hence when we have nothing to do we tend to think negative about everything. Being negative can cause negative impact on our health. It can lead to mental issues as well.
Depression is a disorder which is latent. The person may seem to be happy when you look at him, but deep inside he might be fighting a big battle with himself. Sometimes the person himself is also unaware about his being depressed. At the time when the person starts to stay aloof more often, is the time when he starts to develop depression.
Extremely high and low moods (mood swings), long lasting sadness and irritation, excessive fear, worry, anxiety, social withdrawal, dramatic changes in eating or sleeping habits, are some of the symptoms of depression.
Treating depression is very important as it can prove to be fatal if left untreated. Visiting a psychiatrist is still a taboo in India. In fact, it is better to take medications and treatment from a psychiatrist as early as possible in case of depression.
People with lack of early treatment and medications tend to spin a web of negativity around them which eventually forces them to take a drastic step like suicide. Suicide is not a solution to any problem in one's life. If one feels that something is killing him from inside it would be best for him to see a psychiatrist as soon as possible without thinking of what the society will think about him.
If you think that just by talking to someone you trust, will ease you, then just go and pour your heart out in front of that someone. Sometimes it so happens that mere absence of conversation can make you feel frustrated and stressed out. In that condition this can really help you. If it is not possible for you to meet such a person in person you could just call him/her and talk or write whatever you want to tell them on a paper and take a picture and send it to them or type a paragraph and send. The main motive being to be rid of your thoughts that have been constantly eating on your mind. You may also prefer writing all those things on a paper and burn it so that no one can read it in future and you will get rid of the thoughts.
Taking care of your mental health is as important as your body health. Try to be happy and smiling. COVID has changed the lives of so thousands of people the world over possibly forever. It is important to understand that you are not alone suffering from the offsets of this disease. There could be many people suffering from even harsher problems than you. Think of them. Change your outlook of looking at problems. Problems are going to be there in every phase of your life COVID or no COVID. So why not look at it as a challenge and not something that will ruin your life? Be calm and think about solutions to solve the problem. Being tensed and being stressed out can never solve any problem.
I just hope my little efforts can help someone in some way. Just remember MIND MATTERS.
Thank you
Regards,
Anuradha Jagirdar.
